Delivered a lecture on "Production of Medical RI using an Accelerator" at JAPI
News Release
Delivered a lecture on "Production of Medical RI Using an Accelerator" at the JAPI (Japanese Association for the Promotion of Industrial Application of Irradiation) lecture held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.
In recent years, research and development of cancer treatment using alpha rays generated from RI
(Radioisotope) with a short half-life has been actively promoted, and a stable supply of short-life RI
produced from accelerators has become an issue.
In addition, technetium-99m, a type of RI widely used in nuclear medicine testing, is currently entirely
imported from overseas, and efforts are underway to produce it domestically using accelerators.
Thus, accelerators are expected to play an active role not only in research on high-energy physics such
as elementary particles, but also in the production of RIs for medical use.
